Winners Exemplify Outstanding NC Friends Groups

Patrick Beaver Memorial/Ridgeview Branch (114)

  • Donated a total of $23,000.00 to Hickory Public Library system ($15,000 to transform unused space into a conference room; $8,000 to purchase furniture for the teen area, preschool and senior outreach items and additional books for the library

  • Additional monies raised also support children’s author visits, adult programs, summer reading and materials

  • Had 3 goals for the year: fundraising six 4th Saturday book sales, gift baskets, quilt raffle internet book sales, book bags; increasing public awareness through newsletters, membership growth and maintenance, membership brochures, Annual Storytelling Festival; and impacting the physical space of the library (see above)

Carrboro Branch Library (200)

  • Advocacy efforts to get a free standing library for a Carrboro (SW Orange County) Branch Library -In the fall of 2010 County placed an option on land downtown.

  • Those close to the proposed site fought the location. Friends countered with petition of protest, utilized the press and advocated with county officials

  • In April 2011 county officials approved site for library to be built in 2015.

  • This effort has been the focus of this Friends group’s activities for 24 years.

  • 2002 Reid Award winner for Carrboro Branch Library Arts Program-still active

  • Gives two scholarships $1500 to UNC student in library science, $500 for High School student who understands importance of community service.

  • Donates hundreds of used books to various groups in the community

  • Board member recognized for volunteer service by RSVP

Alamance County (May Memorial Public Library (450) 

  • *Successful Alamance (community) Read-The Pleasure Was Mine

  • Book selection committee was diverse and incorporated a blog

  • Significant savings in cost of books allowed them to sell at a reduced rate-sold 500 more than in previous years

  • Used social networking (Facebook and Twitter), created project website and new Friends website

  • Held great supporting events-writing workshop, BBQ square dance, craft project, community mural 

Watauga County (385)

  • Reading and Rolling summer reading program for students of four rural elementary schools who because of location, hours and parents’ schedules can’t access the public library.  10 library books are delivered every 2 weeks by volunteers to the home of students whose parents enroll them in the program. In 2011 there were 62 children enrolled and 15 volunteers.  A sizable donation has allowed the Watauga Friends to purchase one new book for every student from a particular school for that school’s library.  Nameplates were placed in those books in honor of the children who participated in the 2011 R&R program. Cooperative venture of school and public library, Friends, library volunteers and parents.

  • Hosted Getting to Know You reception and dinner for elected officials

  • Funded $385 tuition for librarian’s participation in Watauga Leadership Challenge

  • Participated in Library Legislative Day in Raleigh

  • Sponsored Annual Holiday Luncheon for library staff

  • Received VITA grant to sponsor free tax assistance

  • Held first gift basket sale

  • Tea party, special book sale, hosted author visit to raise funds to refurbish mystery collection

  • Changed date of Annual Mall Book Sale raising over $7,000-new partnerships increased public awareness

  • Proceeds from Book Sale were used to provide match funds for library’s Radio Frequency Identification grant proposal (which library received).

  • Co-sponsored Youth Writers Contest during National Library Week

  • Collaborated with Employment Security Commission to purchase 57 books for new Job Search and Career Development Collection
